Swat, August 24, 2025, 02:37 PM PKT – Green Pakistan Initiative Expands Afforestation in Swat to Combat Floods
The Green Pakistan Initiative has intensified its afforestation drive in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with over 50,000 native saplings planted on August 24, 2025, to bolster flood defenses.
The effort, part of the Upscaling Green Pakistan Program, aims to restore degraded ecosystems and mitigate climate change impacts in flood-prone regions.
Local farmers and communities are actively participating, transforming barren lands into green shields.
According to the Ministry of Climate Change, the campaign builds on the success of planting 713 million saplings in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with Swat’s Barikot and Buner leading efforts.
Farmer Samad Khan, who planted 10,000 trees, told APP,
“These trees protect our fields from floods and revive our soil.”
The initiative promotes native species like Chir pine and Deodar,
which stabilize soil and reduce floodwater velocity, critical after the devastating 2022 floods.
The program also supports agroforestry, boosting crop yields by 20–30% while enhancing biodiversity.
Provincial authorities aim to plant 41 million saplings this monsoon season, with real-time monitoring via modern technology.
Federal Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, emphasized,
Trees are our frontline defense against climate disasters.
