ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a strong warning to India, stating that any attempt to block Pakistan’s share of water in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty will be met with a firm and unforgettable response.
“You threaten to stop our water. If you attempt such a move, Pakistan will teach you a lesson you will never forget,” the premier declared during his address at an event marking International Youth Day in Islamabad.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that water is Pakistan’s lifeline and that there will be no compromise on the nation’s rights under international agreements.
“New Pakistan” After May 10 Victory
The prime minister recalled the events of May 10, when the Pakistan Air Force reportedly downed six Indian fighter jets, calling it a historic moment that sunk India’s pride. He said this military success marked the emergence of a “new Pakistan” that stands strong against external threats.
Youth Empowerment Initiatives
Highlighting the government’s focus on empowering young people, PM Shehbaz announced the distribution of 100,000 interest-free laptops to students purely on merit.
“This government believes in transparency and merit, and we will ensure both in the distribution process,” he assured.
Minorities’ Rights and Interfaith Harmony
The prime minister praised the contribution of minorities to Pakistan’s development, with Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf affirming that the government is ensuring equal rights for all citizens under the Constitution.
A 5% quota in jobs for minorities has been announced as part of a policy to promote interfaith harmony.
Background on the Indus Waters Treaty
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, allocates control over the waters of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. The treaty has survived decades of strained relations, but recent tensions have reignited fears over its potential violation.
