Pakistan Calls for National Reconciliation in Divided Libya at UN

United Nations, August 22, 2025 – Pakistan urged timely efforts for national reconciliation in Libya and careful reinvestment of frozen assets for the Libyan people’s benefit. Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, addressed the Security Council, supporting peace and stability initiatives.

Jadoon emphasized a time-bound pathway to political reconciliation and national elections. Libya remains divided between the Government of National Unity in Tripoli and the Government of National Stability in Benghazi, nearly 15 years after Muammar Gaddafi’s fall. Recent municipal elections succeeded in 26 areas, with hopes for the remaining 37 soon.

He highlighted UNSMIL’s report on security uncertainties, stalled reconciliation, and weak economics, calling for inclusive dialogue. Pakistan backs UNSMIL’s proactive role in uniting parties. Hannah Tetteh, UNSMIL head, proposed a 12-18 month roadmap with pillars for electoral frameworks, unified government, and broad participation.
