The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs have finalized a $1 billion agreement for development projects scheduled for 2026. This substantial milestone was achieved during a high-level meeting in Islamabad.

ADB President Masato Kanda and Minister Ahad Khan Cheema signed the agreement, which aims to boost climate resilience and improve infrastructure throughout the nation. This continues ADB’s increased funding commitment from September 2024, which totaled $720 million.

Provincial Funding Allocation

The $1 billion funding will address key provincial development priorities, emphasizing disaster resilience and enhancing connectivity across Pakistan.

  • $600 million is allocated for Sindh’s flood recovery programs
  • $400 million is earmarked to improve rural road infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Minister Cheema told NEN, “These initiatives will drive sustainable growth.” The projects aim to enhance disaster resilience and strengthen provincial connectivity.

Economic Impact and Employment

The development projects are expected to generate 15,000 jobs across Pakistan, benefiting 2 million residents in the affected regions. The projects will start in January 2026 and will be implemented in phases over several years.

President Kanda commended Pakistan’s reform efforts, especially in tax administration and the energy sector, calling them significant achievements.

Federal Oversight and Implementation

The Ministry of Economic Affairs will set up oversight committees to ensure transparent project management and improved accountability during implementation.

A senior ministry official stated, “This partnership is transformative.” The reforms ensure the foundation for effective project delivery.
