Pakistan Aims to Boost Indigenous Oilseed Cultivation

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Oilseed Department has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance local cultivation of oilseeds, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and bolster domestic edible oil production. The initiative, aimed at increasing self-sufficiency in edible oil, targets raising local output to cover 27 percent of national needs.

The plan, which details a phased approach, seeks to promote indigenous oilseed development as a key strategy for import substitution. This effort is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s economic resilience by reducing the cost burden of imported edible oils.

The proposal underscores the importance of supporting farmers in adopting advanced cultivation techniques to maximize production. It emphasizes collaboration among governmental bodies, research institutions, and the agriculture sector to achieve the outlined goals.
