LAHORE — Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Friday affirmed her commitment to eradicating child labour and ensuring a safe and dignified future for children across the province. Speaking on the World Day Against Child Labour, she urged parents to provide children with education, healthcare, and recreational opportunities.
The chief minister emphasized that respect for children’s rights is crucial for a civilized society, stating that Punjab is becoming a safer place for children. “Children are my red line,” she declared, warning that violence, abuse, or exploitation of children would not be tolerated. She also cautioned against employing children in labor, specifically mentioning brick kilns and other workplaces, with strict legal action promised for violators.
Referring to the theme of the day, “Fair opportunities for children, no to child labour, and dignified employment for youth,” Sharif remarked that it underscores a collective duty to protect children. Initiatives such as the Honhaar Scholarship Programme and the laptop distribution scheme are designed to encourage education over labor. She also highlighted the School Meal Programme, aimed at combating malnutrition among schoolchildren.
Sharif stressed that eliminating child labour requires joint efforts, calling for increased awareness and coordinated action. She affirmed the Punjab government’s dedication to supporting children’s nutrition, education, upbringing, and healthcare through various institutional measures.
