Chitral, August 24, 2025, 02:52 PM PKT – Pakistani mountaineers have reached the summit of Tirich Mir, the highest peak in the Hindu Kush at 7,708 meters. This achievement is sparking a surge in adventure tourism in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Renowned climbers Sirbaz Khan and Abid Baig from Gilgit-Baltistan led the successful ascent on August 24, 2025. Their accomplishment significantly elevates Chitral’s status as a leading mountaineering hub, marking a notable milestone for its adventure tourism sector.

Growing International Interest

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) has reported over 200 inquiries from climbers worldwide following the team’s success. This wave of interest is solidifying Chitral’s emerging reputation as a premier destination for mountaineers.

KPCTA Director Umar Khan, during a press conference, remarked, “This historic climb, supported by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, highlights Chitral’s immense potential.”

75th Anniversary of Tirich Mir

The expedition coincides with the “Year of Tirich Mir,” celebrating 75 years since its first ascent in 1950. This anniversary has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally.

Local climbers Akmal Naveed and Shamsul Qamar were the first from Chitral to scale Tirich Mir, a notable achievement for the local mountaineering community. More than 60 trekkers have reached the base camp, supported by 100 local porters, providing a substantial boost to the local economy.

Provincial Government Support

The provincial government has waived royalty fees for 2025–26 to attract global climbers. Officials are planning future expeditions to peaks such as Noshaq in upcoming seasons.

Sirbaz Khan noted, “Chitral’s peaks have the potential to compete with the Himalayas for adventure tourism.” These initiatives aim to create jobs and promote sustainable tourism growth in the region.

The government’s support emphasizes a strong commitment to making adventure tourism a key economic driver in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
