ADB Commits $500M for Pakistan’s Climate Resilience Projects

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged $500 million to boost Pakistan’s climate resilience through key infrastructure projects. This substantial funding was announced on August 27, 2025, following a pivotal meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and ADB President Masato Kanda at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.

Strategic Funding Allocation

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb explained that the funding will support Pakistan’s climate and economic reforms, specifically targeting major infrastructure needs in two provinces:

  • $300 million allocated for flood-resistant infrastructure in Sindh
  • $200 million earmarked for renewable energy projects in Balochistan

This investment is aimed at advancing Pakistan’s climate adaptation strategy and infrastructure development goals.

Strengthened ADB Partnership

While in Islamabad, ADB President Masato Kanda commended Pakistan’s progress in tax and energy sector reforms. He noted the bank’s extensive support for 15 projects since 2022. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked ADB for its enduring partnership, highlighting its crucial role in national development. He urged ministries to accelerate project timelines to ensure quick implementation.

Anticipated Economic and Employment Benefits

Pending ADB Board approval in October 2025, these projects aim to enhance disaster preparedness and foster economic stability nationwide. Renewable energy initiatives in Balochistan are projected to create approximately 10,000 jobs, significantly boosting the provincial economy. This initiative will propel Pakistan’s transition to clean energy and strengthen its climate resilience under the federal government’s reform strategy.
