ISLAMABAD — The International Labour Organization (ILO) on Thursday called for accelerated and sustained efforts to eliminate child labour, stressing the need to tackle root causes including poverty, informal employment and inadequate access to education.
ILO Country Director George T. Tonstol made the remarks during a media interaction ahead of the World Day Against Child Labour, urging governments, employers and civil society to intensify coordinated action against the practice.
Tonstol underlined that expanding quality education and creating decent work opportunities for adults were critical to breaking the cycle that drives families to send children into labour rather than schools.
The World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12, serves as a global platform to highlight the plight of millions of children engaged in hazardous and exploitative work, and to galvanise political commitment toward its eradication.
