Junaid Anwar Chaudhry Launches Karachi Port Pollution Control Plan

Karachi, August 24, 2025, 03:04 PM PKT – Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has launched an ambitious pollution control plan for Karachi and Qasim ports. This initiative aims to safeguard marine ecosystems and coastal communities from persistent environmental threats.

Pollution Interception at Source

The plan is part of Chaudhry’s commitment to addressing post-rain pollution, focusing on intercepting contaminants before they enter the ocean. More than 100 local workers are dedicated to managing the plan’s initial phase at both ports.

Key Components of the Initiative

  • Installing storm water treatment plants at strategic locations
  • Collaborating with the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency to separate sewage from storm drains
  • Deploying advanced skimmer boats for oil residue management
  • Implementing systems for plastic waste collection

Federal Government Addresses Sewage Challenges

“Preventing pollution at its source is crucial for protecting Karachi’s fisheries and biodiversity,” Chaudhry stated at the launch event. The ports handle 472 million gallons of sewage daily, facing challenges from climate-driven monsoon rains.

Such conditions highlight the urgent need for sustainable maritime practices that align with global climate goals and uphold Pakistan’s environmental commitments.

Marine Habitat Restoration and Stewardship

“Our ports will lead in environmental stewardship,” Chaudhry declared, emphasizing the government’s vision for maritime infrastructure. This initiative aims to restore marine habitats and support fishing communities by 2026.

This effort involves collaboration between federal maritime authorities and provincial environmental agencies, focusing on protecting Karachi’s coastal ecosystems through sustainable port management.
