NDMA Intensifies Evacuations as Ravi River Flooding Escalates

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has intensified evacuation efforts as Ravi River flooding escalates in Punjab’s low-lying areas. On August 26, 2025, flood levels surged to 250,000 cusecs at Jassar.

This crisis began when India released 210,000 cusecs from Thein Dam, compelling over 40,000 residents to relocate to safer zones as floodwaters threatened multiple districts.

Emergency Response Across Punjab

NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider highlighted the agency’s comprehensive response strategy. “We are mobilizing all resources to protect lives,” he stated. A significant flood wave has reached Shahdara, with water flows reported at 90,000 cusecs. Areas at risk include Park View and Motorway-post neighborhoods.

Authorities continue to monitor water levels closely to adapt to the evolving situation effectively.

Rising Water Levels and Critical Flood Zones

The rapid swelling of nullahs such as Bein and Basantar has increased flood risks in Narowal and Sialkot districts. Local authorities have ordered evacuations for vulnerable communities in these areas to ensure safety.

Key Flood Measurements

  • Jassar: 250,000 cusecs
  • Shahdara: 90,000 cusecs
  • Thein Dam release: 210,000 cusecs

Safety Measures and Relief Operations

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has deployed emergency teams to the affected regions. Relief camps are operational, providing food, shelter, and medical aid to evacuees.

Relief efforts continue to ensure no one is left stranded. The NDMA advises residents to avoid riverbanks and stay informed via official channels. Alerts are available through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app. A high-level meeting is planned for August 28 to assess damages and continue relief operations.
