IHC Chief Justice Clarifies Remarks in Exchange with Imaan Mazar
Chief Justice Addresses Concerns Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) clarified his recent comments during a dialogue with rights activist and lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir. He explained that his words were taken out of context. At a hearing regarding the lifting of Mahrang Baloch’s Exit Control List restriction, Justice Dogar warned Mazari of potential contempt of court charges after she reportedly called him a ‘dictator’. Clearing Up Misunderstandings The issue resurfaced during separate court sessions. Justice Dogar noted he viewed Mazari as ‘just like a daughter’ and sought to resolve any misunderstandings from their earlier exchange. He said, ‘As chief justice and an elder, I was trying to help her understand.’ He expressed regret that his statements were misconstrued, causing ‘a storm’. Justice Dogar reiterated that while Mazari can criticize his judgments, it should be done impassively. Context of Statements Explained During the exchange, Justice Dogar addressed Mazari’s husband, Hadi Ali Chatha, saying, ‘Hadi sahib, make her understand; if I get hold of her someday…’ He clarified there was no physical threat, stating, ‘I did not say that I will get hold of her, although this has been circulating since yesterday.’ He encouraged Chatha to accompany Mazari to avoid any contempt actions that could harm her career. Focus on Professionalism Justice Dogar reiterated, ‘I explained things as I would to a child, but she was not understanding.’ He questioned, ‘She kept stressing fundamental rights, but does this court not have its own rights?’ Mazari’s Reaction Mazari, known for her forthright stance, responded on X after the hearing. She highlighted, ‘It is vital for CJ IHC to know I am in court as a lawyer representing my client, following professional conduct, and a court should reciprocate.’
