LAHORE — The Punjab government has unveiled a substantial budget for the next fiscal year, announcing Rs 61.14 billion for the irrigation sector and Rs 5.73 billion for the energy sector. This was disclosed by Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman during his budget speech at the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday.
Irrigation Development Focus
The minister drew attention to rising water-related challenges and detailed the government’s plans to upgrade the canal system, reduce water loss, and strengthen irrigation infrastructure. For these initiatives, Rs 30 billion is designated for development expenditures, with Rs 31.14 billion for non-development expenditures for the fiscal year 2026-27.
Major Irrigation Projects
The finance minister described major undertakings, allocating Rs 95 billion to water resources, irrigation, and flood protection for the current fiscal year. Notable projects include:
- Umbrella Canal Lining Project (Phase-II), aiming to line 500 kilometers of distributaries and minors.
- Expansion of storage capacity by 100,000 acre-feet through the Potohar Small Dams Program.
Flood Resilience Initiative
An allocation of Rs 56 billion is proposed for the Flood Resilience Programme. This aims to support 51 infrastructural schemes in the upcoming fiscal year, bolstering flood protection and infrastructure stability.
