ISLAMABAD — Syed Abdul Qadir Gillani, a Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) lawmaker, proposed a direct subsidy system for farmers during a budget debate on Sunday. He stressed the importance of transparent distribution of subsidised fertilisers and diesel to effectively support farmers.
Proposed Subsidy Model
Gillani recommended adopting a model akin to the Benazir Income Support Programme. This approach ensures that subsidies reach farmers directly, bypassing administrative delays and providing prompt relief to the agricultural community.
Impact on Pakistan’s Economy
The proposal aims to give substantial support to the agricultural sector, a crucial part of Pakistan’s economy. By directly aiding farmers, the initiative seeks to increase productivity and foster sector growth.
Addressing Inefficiencies
Gillani highlighted current inefficiencies in subsidy distribution during the debate. The proposed system intends to streamline financial support delivery to agriculture, enhancing efficiency. This strategy addresses farmers’ challenges and offers a clear path to economic development.
