ISLAMABAD — Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) lawmaker Syed Abdul Qadir Gillani on Sunday proposed the implementation of a direct subsidy system for farmers during a budget debate. He advocated for a transparent mechanism to distribute subsidised fertiliser and diesel to farmers.
Gillani suggested a model similar to the Benazir Income Support Programme to ensure that the subsidies reach the intended beneficiaries without administrative hurdles. This approach, he argued, would provide significant relief to the agricultural sector, which is a vital part of the country’s economy.
During the debate, Gillani emphasised the importance of supporting farmers directly to enhance productivity and sustain agricultural growth. The proposal aims to address existing inefficiencies in the subsidy distribution process.
